OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE SPORTS COMMITTEE
MISSIONSTATEMENT
The Purpose of the Our Lady Queen of Peace Sports Program is to teach the fundamentals of the various sports to the children of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish and enhance Christian development through sports. The values of integrity and discipline will be emphasized while providing an enjoyable learning experience for our children.
OBJECTIVES:
q To instill in our children, parents and coaches Christian ethics, sportsmanship and teamwork.
q To create an atmosphere conducive to the development of good spiritual, physical,
aesthetic, intellectual, emotional and social growth for each child.
q To build and live in a Christian community so that each person can experience learning and living in
the light of Christian faith and love.
q To develop within our children and the adults with whom they interact a Christian respect for all
God’s creations.
q To create an environment that fosters sportsmanship while providing an enjoyable experience
for each participant.
q To teach each sport to the maximum number of children within the reasonable limitations of
available resources.
q To develop coaches with the skills necessary to implement the Mission Statement.
q To teach and require respect of coaches, other players, officials, adult volunteers and themselves.
q To teach a sense of community by having the participants give back to the program through
community service.
EXPECTATIONS:
PLAYERS SHOULD:
q Abide by the Mission Statement and Objectives;
q Abide by the CYO Code of Ethics;
q Maintain academic and good conduct standards;
q Recognize and demonstrate the fundamentals of sportsmanship;
q Censure fellow teammates whose behavior is unbecoming;
q Show respect for an injured player when removed from the contest;
q Respect the property of hosts and the authority of officials and volunteers;
q Not applaud errors of opponents or penalties inflicted upon them;
q Not heckle or jeer members of the opponent’s team;
q Never criticize fellow teammates, opponents or coaches;
q Abstain from profane language, and obnoxious behavior;
q Demonstrate appropriate behavior before, during and after contests.
COACHES SHOULD:
q Abide by the Mission Statement and Objectives;
q Abide by the CYO Code of Ethics and comply with CYO eligibility requirements;
q Remember that they and their team represent Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish;
q Remember that they are role models both on and off the site and should always set a good
example for others to follow;
q Attend mandatory CYO seminars, clinics and meetings for coaches;
q Develop coaching skills by attending CYO and additional parish sponsored clinics;
q Assist in the development of Assistant Coaches, Team Mothers, Team Fathers and Gym
Volunteers.
PARENTS of PLAYERS & THEIR GUESTS SHOULD:
q Abide by the Mission Statement;
q Abide by the CYO Code of Ethics;
q Remember that coaches are volunteers and have the interest of all members of the team in
mind;
q Remember that as spectators, parents also represent Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish and
should each behave according to the principles of Christian ethics before, during and after each
practice and game;
q Remember that the program relies on volunteers for its success and therefore, it is imperative
that each family fulfill a service obligation to the program;
q Be a registered family at OLQP church and maintain the same obligation of contribution as
OLQP school parents.
CYO ATHLETIC CODE OF ETHICS
CYO athletic competition is a means of training young people to enjoy healthful sports but with the ends, that win or lose, they learn to respect opponents, officials and spectators. It is important that all concerned with the CYO athletic program follow the code:
To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play
To stress the values derived from being fair
To show cordial courtesy to opponents and officials
To establish a happy relationship between visitors and hosts
To respect the integrity and judgment of officials
To achieve a thorough understanding and acceptance of the rules and standards of eligibility
To encourage leadership, use of initiative and good judgment by the players
To recognize the purpose of competition is to promote the physical, mental, moral and social and
emotional well-being of the players and
To remember that a contest is only an activity- not a matter of life and death for player, coach , school,
parish, official and fan.
